In January I chose HEAL and in February NOURISH and they were absolutely the right things to aim for. My back is slowly recovering and I’m feeling a lot healthier. I’m not quite at the point where I can start running or working out. But I can start moving.

I’m feeling sluggish from all this sitting and resting, so I plan to get out for a walk at lunch times when I can and start some short and cautious bodyweight strength and stretching.

我无法计算数量ber of times I’ve had this conversation with my clients over the last few weeks.

Mental and physical exhaustion are linked. We’re a year into a pandemic that’s been full of ups and downs, even if we’re one of the lucky ones with jobs and a garden it’s still bloody tiring mentally. Popping to the shops is an expedition requiring face masks, hand sanitiser and burning all your clothes when you get home. Walking down the road is an elaborate chess game requiring you to think about the location of cars, other pedestrians, street furniture and bus stop queues.

It’s been dark, and cold, we have our own personal troubles that we always have, but layered on top of the apocalypse.

Give yourself a break. Remember to nourish your mind and body, treat them nicely, but don’t beat yourself up if you can’t finish that workout or you’re too tired to cook and order a takeaway, or you’ve just ordered yet another pair of shoes that you have absolutely nowhere to wear just for the excitement of getting a delivery.

Today I have an absurdly expensive Philips Hue lightbulb arriving, and that’s about the most exciting thing that’s happened so far this year. What’s your 2021 highlight so far?

I wasted my day off feeling sorry for myself, I couldn’t face yet another night watching Netflix, I’m so sick of working on a screen and training on a screen and socialising on a screen and relaxing with another screen. 

So I went to bed early with a book, and today I made myself have a bath, do my hair properly and put on make up and proper clothes.

I feel a ton more positive and less like a whiny child throwing a tantrum about her very lucky and privileged life.

I am going to make more effort to step away from the screens though. My back injury (woe is me) means my normal active methods of relaxation like running, or even yoga, aren’t open to me, but that doesn’t mean I have to stare at Netflix in my spare time. There are books I haven’t read, colouring pencils and colouring books that have been in a drawer for years, hell, I could even bake or learn to sew (this is unlikely, I don’t want to, but I COULD, and I should definitely do this instead of throwing a pity party because I don’t want to watch Netflix)

What do you do to relax that doesn’t involve a screen?

我在我的最后一篇文章中提到了 I’ve started picking a focus word rather than (and sometimes in addition to) setting measurable goals. It helps me think about what’s most important right now.

In January I chose “Heal”. I’ve had a back injury since September that has been deteriorating despite my efforts to “fix” it. My anxiety and depression has been crippling to the point where it’s producing physical symptoms and what I needed was space to rest and heal properly without putting pressure on myself. Some things you can’t fix just by working harder.

So, much like last month, it wasn’t necessarily exercise I had in mind when I chose this Infinity 2-piece and the Anna tie back jumper from @fableticseu , It was sofa snuggling with Pugs. Fortunately it serves its purpose very well and is also ideal for coaching on Zoom.

Fabletics are encouraging a #smartrestart after a tough 2020 to focus on yourself and your goals for the year ahead without pressure. This fits perfectly with the idea behind choosing a focus word. It’s about getting to grips with what makes you feel good and what you need rather than rushing to the imaginary finish line. 

It’s completely pretentious, but my word for February is “Nourish” . There has been some slow improvement in my back pain and now I’ve started to heal it’s time to make sure my body and mind have the resources they need to grow and flourish.

今天早上我收到了一些人ers to model for a vintage clothing company I work for. They were the same size I’ve always worn, but they didn’t button up.

I’ve been doing a lot of work recently on intuitive eating and my relationship with food, but my first instinct was to be really upset and immediately think I needed to lose weight.

Then I stepped back and thought about it objectively.

Bodies change.

Throughout your life, and throughout each year and each day they change. For the last 5 months I’ve been battling a back injury that has left me unable to do even Pilates or Yoga as exercise. We’re in lockdown in the middle of a global pandemic and what my body needs is to be nourished with food that is good for the body and the soul, not punished with restriction just so I can fit into a pair of trousers.

I’ve been choosing a word each month to help me focus on what’s important and this month I chose “Heal” to remind me to give myself time to recover both my body and my mind. 

Healing your relationship with food and your body is a long process, diet culture is the norm and it’s a hard mindset to get rid of. 

Your body is an amazing machine and it knows what it needs. Listen to it.

No. What I was thinking was how cosy this chunky fleecy jumper looked, and I was right.

The seamless bra and leggings set underneath (swipe to see the bra) are also super comfy, and perfect for doing Yoga or my weekly Zoom Pilates class. 

I’m not entirely sure on the colour. I think it makes me look like I forgot to put trousers on (Fun fact, I once had a blog post banned from Google Ads for nudity because I was wearing pink leggings), but they are a perfect fit.

Now I’m off to sit on the sofa which is more comfy but less picturesque than the floor by the fireplace.

I’m 41 and for most of my life I didn’t think exercise could be for anything other than weight loss and burning calories.

I did a couple of Race for Life’s, I bought a Davina DVD and I had a few short lived gym memberships over the years. But mostly I wanted to have a good time, drink wine, eat pizza, buy nice frocks and stay up late, and any exercise or dieting I did was related to the frocks thing.

Swipe right to the second picture and you’ll see me doing my first 5k run that wasn’t a Race for Life. I signed up for it in 2012 in an attempt to “get fit” and lose weight. I was 33.

I started a fitness blog where I documented how much weight I lost or gained each month and I beat myself up for eating badly.

Whilst training for that race I gradually discovered I loved it. I signed up for 10ks, I learned about nutrition, then I started playing Roller Derby and lifting weights.

I learned that exercise was about more than aesthetics and that food and nutrition was about more than weight loss. I thought about health, fitness and performance.

Then I learned that moving for the love of it was ok, even if you didn’t have a plan or a goal, that actually your weight has nothing to do with health, and that food and nutrition can be about happiness, and comfort and that finding your balance and your happy place with food and exercise is a long journey.

I think this journey makes me a better coach now. I know how you feel when you can’t be bothered today, or you doubt yourself, or you feel like you’re not making progress. I haven’t been “sporty” since I was a teenager and always loved to exercise.

I guess what I’m musing on is that we all grow and change through our lives. The opinions and behaviours we have at 20 won’t be the same ones we have at 40, or 60. And that’s ok, in fact, it’s brilliant. If you don’t occasionally look back at something you thought 10 years ago and think “hmmm” then what have you been doing for the last 10 years?

Gosh it’s cold!

 I think my fingers are just warming up after spending 4 hours outside coaching this morning.

Lockdown 2.0 has sent us back outside as the gyms are shut, but it’s not June anymore guys and we really are at the whim of the good old English weather.

It quickly became apparent that my lightweight waterproof outdoor coat and a pair of regular leggings wasn’t going to cut it, so a set of @sweatybetty thermodynamics top and leggings became an essential purchase. This is not an ad, I paid for them myself, but I can highly recommend their toastiness to anyone else who needs warm sports kit! I also treated myself to an @underarmouruk ColdGear jacket so I’m super snuggly, apart from my feet and fingers. 

A rechargeable hand warmer is on its way, but I do need a recommendation though. Warm waterproof socks. Do they exist? My shoes get wet on the grass and I lose the feeling in my toes!

Last week I started Couch to 5k in an attempt to get back into regular running and build up distances gradually. But since then my back has got worse, and now I can’t pick the Pugs up again. 🙄

I’m carrying on with Couch to 5k and taking it slow, and I’m also making sure I pay more attention to my stretching by doing a short 7 minute Post Run Yoga stretch when I get back.

Hopefully soon it will ease off and I can get back to weights!
